Fatigue and Loss of Appetite

An important part of maintaining health in a child or adolescent with IBD is identifying and treating specific conditions that can contribute to fatigue, such as anemia or not eating enough calories. Certain cytokines can reduce appetite, and therefore a person having an inflammation response may not consume enough calories in her diet. Inflammation in the stomach (gastritis) can cause discomfort while eating, which again reduces appetite and the amount of food a person eats. Regardless of the cause, if a child is not getting enough calories, the result will be fatigue and weight loss (or poor weight gain), which lead to further harmful effects on her health. If she drinks liquid nutritional supplements during a time of active disease, she will have an easier time maintaining or gaining weight. Controlling the acid in the child’s stomach with medications can ease some of the discomfort of eating.

Symptoms such as fatigue and loss of appetite can also be signs of the emotional, psychological (mental), and social effects of this disease, both before and after diagnosis. Fatigue and loss of appetite are common feelings that take a toll on quality of life in anyone with a chronic illness.
